Welcome to the
Gers. This peaceful backwater of South West
France is quietly becoming a holiday retreat for
those seeking all the best that rural France has
to offer. Gascony is a region of rolling fields and oak woods, hot sun
and sunflowers, terracotta roofed farmhouses and
bleached blond cattle, and away on the southern
horizon, the sharp towering peaks of the
Pyrenees only forty easy-drive miles away. |

We are happy to
offer you bed and breakfast and self catering accommodation in our recently
converted chai, or wine store, a few miles from
the Gascon town of Marciac. The owners (Richard and
Fran) are on site to ensure all your comforts
are provided for, but there is no other holiday
accommodation on, nor in close proximity to, the
property, which lies in a beautiful protected
area of this farming community and is only just
off the main 'Bastide and Castlenau' route. |

A Bertin sits in
it's own 20 acres of meadow and woodland through
which visitors are welcome to wander, perhaps to
the abandoned church at the bottom of the
fields, or simply to lie back in the grass and
watch the buzzards and red kites overhead.
Although not sited in a village (the bastide
village of Beaumarches is 2.6 miles away) there
are numerous small but beautiful medieval
Gascony villages within a few short miles that are
worthy of a walk round, perhaps to see the
churches and views, or to sit for a coffee or
lunch at their restaurants. |

I have
stopped writing the Gascony Diary, in favour of
a new, and more regularly updated blog:
In Gascony Dreaming.
