Markets
The Gers region still maintains and upholds the
greatest of French traditions, the local market.
Whilst most developed countries have succumbed
to high street stores and out of town
supermarkets as the most convenient and cost
effective way of buying goods, the French still
visit markets, en masse, believing them not only
to be a route to purchasing the best produce,
but also an essential part of their social life.
In addition to a towns ‘standard’ weekly market,
where all normal provisions may be purchased,
there may also be more specialised events, where
a particular product will be sold, for instance
foie gras or organic produce
Marciac Market
Our local town holds its weekly general market
on Wednesday mornings, in the town square. All
manner of locally produced and seasonal
foodstuffs are sold, normally by the producers
themselves, as well as a small range of clothes,
at knockdown prices. As well as attracting the
local French community, this market is popular
with British expatriates who have learned the
social value of these events, although they do
seem to spend more time in the local bar than at
the stalls.
Vic Fezensac
On Friday mornings in the town centre, this town
holds an organic and farmers market. The produce
on offer is, as you would expect, of very high
quality. During the summer months there is also
a fortnightly ‘Gascon Specialities’ market,
which is held in the evening. Either of these
events are a great opportunity to pick up some
tasty treats to take back to home, either as
gifts for friends, or for yourselves, as a
reminder of your time in the Gers.
Eauze
Well worth a visit for the wide selection of
Foie Gras on offer, this market also has
standard fare for sale. Taking place in the
Place d’Armagnac, this market starts on Thursday
mornings, and tends to run all day.
