Birdwatching Written by Tony
Corscadden, UK Birding Enthusiast
The birds around A Bertin
are so varied because there is such a wide
variety of habitats in the area and, of course,
there is less intensive use of farmland than in
the UK.
Within a five minute stroll of the house there
is: gorse and broom scrub, crop fields, hay
meadows, unflailed hedgerows, mature deciduous
woodland, deep wooded valleys and poplar and young conifer
plantations.
In a 90 minute early morning stroll (early June
2005) I recorded:
black kite, common buzzard, honey buzzard,
kestrel, quail, turtle dove, hoopoe, wryneck,
woodlark, red-backed shrike, sedge warbler,
melodious warbler, whitethroat, lesser
whitethroat, chiffchaff, stonechat, black
redstart, corn bunting, yellowhammer, cirl
bunting, linnet, serin and golden oriole.
Additional species recorded in August 2005:
Bonelli's Eagle, Booted Eagle (lots!), Barn Owl,
Tawny Owl, Little Owl, Bee-eater, Hoopoe,
Grey-headed woodpecker, Middle-spotted
woodpecker, Lesser-spotted woodpecker,
Nightingale, Redstart, Fan-tailed warbler, Marsh
Tit, Nuthatch, Raven, Hen Harrier, Pied
Flycatcher, Merlin, Melodious Warbler, Hobby.
