The Gers is in
the midi Pyrenees, which, as it's name suggests
often offers staggering views of the mountain
range to the south when driving along the quiet
roads. It is a very lightly populated
department, with some of the cleanest air in
Europe due, in part, to the lack of any through
motorways and industry. Motoring is a joy on the
deserted country lanes and walking or cycling
even more so. The food served in the local
restaurants is very good, locally produced and
mainly unsophisticated at very affordable prices
(a set four course lunch with wine is about 10 -
12 Euros) although some gems of more 'special'
restaurants can be recommended for an occasional
treat. Even in the high season there are no
crowds or queues and always a seat at a
restaurant close by. |

Holidaying in the heart of the Gers will make
you believe that you are the only one to have
discovered this beautiful place, so much space
is there for everyone. Stepping out for a days
sightseeing will lead you into the small
medieval bastide villages of South West France
with their arched walkways, proud churches and
dusty squares. |

There are
music
festivals throughout the summer in many of our
local towns.Without doubt the most prestigious
is the two week long international jazz festival
at Marciac, followed by the country and western
festival at Mirande. Music, fetes and festivals
play an important part in the life of all the
french towns and villages in the summer with
well supported 'vide greniers' (car boot sales)
taking place everywhere. |
