A Trip to the Coast

The closest seaside resort to A Bertin is the beautiful town of Biarritz. In just two hours on normally traffic-free roads (even in August access to the town is fairly trouble-free) you can be on the Atlantic coast and driving into this classical 19th century resort that was the summer playground for all the aristocracy from Europe and Russia. Parking is available on the outside of town but there are also numerous underground car parks down by the seafront that are well signed.

Although it lost out to the glamour and razzmatazz of Cannes and Nice in the early years of the 20th century, its architecture and superb location keeps it as a firm favourite both for taking luxury holidays in its fine sea front hotels and also as a destination, since the 1950’s, for all wannabee and skilled surfers. The Atlantic Ocean roars in onto the 200kilometre sandy coastline that stretches from the Spanish border in the south to Bordeaux in the north bringing good surf for most of the year.

Just south of Biarritz is the chic resort of St Jean de Luz with it’s beautiful sweeping bay, pedestrian shopping streets and expensive boutiques. North of Biarritz is another surfing Mecca, the twin villages of Cap Breton and Hossegor with inland lake for watersports, cycling lanes, surfwear shops and of course, loads of fish restaurants on the harbour.

Due to the easy stress-free driving on fast roads, it is a lovely day out to go to the coast, visit one or two resorts, have lunch and return to the peaceful countryside of the Gers for a late supper.
